Best things to do in Isle of Man

With a deep and rich history, the Isle of Man is an incredibly enchanting island to visit whilst exploring the British Isles. The island rests between Great Britain and Ireland; this crown dependency is totally beautiful to visit. Let us talk about the best things to do in the Isle of Man.

Isle of Man

But first, a fun history Lesson…

3 interesting Facts about the Isle of Man

1. Isle of Man is Self-Governing Island with its own Parliament.

Before, I travelled to the Isle of Man I did not know anything about this place. Ignorantly, I assumed that the Isle of Man was part of the UK. However, the Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom but rather crown dependent. The United Kingdom Government is responsible for the defense and international relations of the Islands and the Crown is ultimately responsible for good governance. Isle of Man have its own parliament, laws, and currency.

2. The Island has its own Language.

Manx Gaelic is an ancient language, tracing its roots back to the Island’s Celtic past. It contains subtle hints of Old Norse from when the Vikings arrived on the shores long, long time ago. How great is that!

Manx language was declared extinct in 2009 by UNESCO. But since then, there has been a passionate call to give Manx Gaelic new life.

3. Isle of Man- Northern Lights

On my visit to the Isle of Man, I found that many of the locals absolutely loved dedicating time to seeing the Northern Lights. So, naturally I took part in this endeavor and went out in the evening to see them. It is not a common thing to see the Northern Lights, that’s why the sightings of them is very special.

Best things to do in Isle of Man

  1. Take a step back and immerse yourself in Community.

I had an exceptional time in the Isle of Man. I went with a few people that I know, and we were hosted by some of the locals who were absolutely amazing. So, for me, this was no ordinary trip where I book a hotel and do the touristy stuff.

This trip was made special by the fact that I got the opportunity to be part of the community.  Of course, four days is not nearly enough time to know everything and see it all. But my time spent with the locals was a great reminder of what community looks and feels like.

You may not get the chance to get hosted when you travel to Isle of Man. So, my advice to you is to immerse yourself into the community by speaking to the locals. Isle of Man has something fresh to offer which is community- which is expressed in the little traditions that unite people.

2. Visit Ramsay

My stay was in Ramsay which is at the north- east point of the Island. Ramsey is a gorgeous place with many of the histories of the island here. If you are visiting in summer, you can also pop over to Ramsay beach.

You can also visit Grove Museum, where you can learn about Victorian life and its impact on Liverpool shipping merchant.

3. Cregneash Village

Cregneash Village is one of the last strongholds of Manx Language. If you want to step back in time to see the life of a small Manx crofting community Cregneash will give you that experience. Don’t forget to explore the thatched cottages, workshops, and barns.

4. Castletown

CastleTown

Castletown is a small historical town in the south of the Isle of Man that is famous for the castle- hence the name. Castle Rushen was built for a Viking King in the 16th century and is still in remarkable condition. There is a museum here which is worth checking out.

5. Scenic views of the Island

You can spot some sea lions

A drive around the island will give you a chance to see different parts of the Island. What is perfect is that driving to different parts of the island does not take long at all. You get the opportunity to see several picturesque views and wild life.

6. The Great Laxey Wheel

The Laxey Wheel is built into the hillside above the village of Laxey. It is the largest surviving original working waterwheel in the world. It is an extraordinary example of Victorian engineering in the British Isles, and certainly worth the Visit.

O’L Final Thoughts

Isle of Man is an enchanting and beautiful island that you need to visit. There several things to do on the island in summer and winter which I have not even covered on this blog. The best thing to do is go and discover more about the island. My biggest tip for you is integrate with the locals and be part of the community.
