If you are anything like me, you may find yourself feeling bad when you go travelling because you are not keeping fit. I always tell myself I will find a way to exercise when I travel, but a lot of the time, my itinerary is so long I rarely find the time. However, there have been occasions where I have found the time, though I am not as consistent than when I am at home, but this is okay. Due to the inconsistency, I decided to change my mindset about exercising whilst travelling. Firstly, it is okay to rest my body. Secondly, if I do want to exercise, I find different ways to do it. The regular workouts I do may be more difficult, so I have had to find new ways to keep fit. That being said, here are my 5 tips for staying fit whilst travelling.
Gyms
The first tip may feel quite obvious, but a lot of people do not really take notice of gym options in a hotel. If you have the budget, finding a hotel with a gym is a good option whilst travelling. Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to fit in a few quick workouts. A lot of hotel gyms only have a small selection of equipment to use, so just keep this in mind if you are someone who enjoys lifting heavy weights. If you are travelling for a long period of time, you can always find local gyms in the area. This may save you a bit of money as it means you do not need to find hotels with gyms.
Swimming
When people go abroad, the majority of time they are going for a summer holiday. Of course this is not all the time, some people may go for hiking trips or city breaks. However, most people I know do tend to go away to a beach for a hot getaway. Swimming is a great option to keep fit if you are travelling near a beach or have a hotel with a swimming pool in it. If you cannot swim, then this is an option you’ll have to skip passed.
Home workouts
There have been multiple occasions where I have wanted to do a quick workout on holiday. I may seem insane to some for saying this, but it is because I am not someone who likes to sit still for too long. Most people think holiday’s are for relaxing, and I agree to an extent, but I do enjoy a quick workout. When I stayed in an Airbnb in Portugal, I decided I would do a quick home workout. This involved a circuit of multiple exercises which were performed for 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off. It was a quick way for me to get my heart pumping and blood flowing. If you have the space in your hotel room, or apartment, then this is a great thing to do to keep fit whilst travelling. You can find multiple short workouts on Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram.
Activities
Doing a variety of activities whilst you are travelling is a great way to stay fit without you realising it. For example, if you are close by to mountains, you can go hiking which is a great workout. If you are close by to a beach, you could do things like kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming or anything else. If you are in a city, you could hire some bikes to go around and site see. There are many ways to keep active on holidays whilst also exploring and enjoying your time.
Steps
Lastly, we have steps. This again may be an obvious one, but you may not be thinking of it. A lot of people think that in order to stay fit you need to do an intense workout. Although that can help, if you are travelling it may be difficult to find the time. That is why I have included steps into this section. A lot of the time you will be wondering around, exploring the city you are in. You are likely getting a lot of steps in whilst doing this. For me, I actually get a lot more steps in when I travel than when I am at home. So, if you do not want to workout in the traditional way, just make sure you are going on long walks whilst you are away.
It’s okay to rest whilst you are travelling, you do not need to pressure yourself in to working out and there is no harm in taking a break. However, I know for a lot of fitness enthusiasts it may feel weird coming out of a fitness routine. These are some ways that you can continue to keep fit whilst travelling. Just because you may not be doing the traditional exercises you are used to, it does not mean you are not keeping fit in other ways. Remember to stretch before and after any exercises you do do and remember to be safe!
