Take a step back and just think about your everyday living. One thing that you will realise is how susceptible we tend to be to negativity. I chose to use the terms ‘negative’ and ‘positive’ as they are the most commonly used and relatable terms in this generation. But being positive goes deeper than ‘positive vibes only’. It’s a way of thinking and living which one achieves by making a conscious decision. So, how to become positive will be discussed in this blog.
As mentioned, negativity is something that seems to come easy to us humans. Think about it this way, you are having a fantastic day, you are in a great mood. Then someone at work for example, does something small/or big to annoy you. For most people this instance will ruin their whole entire day. Instead of appreciating the fact that your day has been good up until this point. Most people will choose to go with the negative.
Another way which people are inclined to being negative is found in the way which they talk about themselves. Think about the things that you say about yourself. The comments that you make about your looks. We have all at some point said something about the way we look. I know certainly there are things I don’t particularly like about myself. However, the issue is found when you nit-pick every single thing about yourself. When you are always negative about how you look. For most people it’s become a norm to be harsh to themselves. But I want to tell you constantly being harsh and negative to yourself is not something that you should normalise.
Being negative to yourself doesn’t just end there. People who are negative to themselves often end up being negative about other people. It is a vicious cycle. So, it is important to learn how to become positive. It will change how you see yourself and how you perceive those around you.
How to become a Positive Person.
You need to understand that it is possible to train your brain to become more positive.
- Start speaking positively about yourself.
The first thing that you need to do is write down 5 qualities about yourself that you love. It may be an easy task for some people. But for others, this is where you will begin to identify how negative you are to yourself. Make sure that in your list, you include both your external qualities and internal qualities. What is it about yourself that you love the most. Don’t be modest about it either. We spend far too much time hating on ourselves, that when it is time to love yourself, we think it is vanity.
The list may go beyond 5, which is even better. But write these qualities down, so that when the negative thoughts start. You can balance it or overpower these negative thoughts with those positive qualities. It may seem like a tedious task, but it will go a long way.
2. Write down 5 positive characteristics that you would like to have.
From this point forward, you have determined that you want to become a positive person. The next task that you need to do is write down 5 positive characteristics that you want to embody.
Here are some examples of positive characteristics:
- Optimism: Hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something.
- Enthusiasm: Intense and eager enjoyment, interest, or approval.
- Compassion: Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.
- Kindness: The quality of being friendly, respectful generous, and considerate.
- Resilient: The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
Most people focus on who they are, rather than what they can become. Positivity is about becoming. You don’t have to naturally be these things; you can work on being a more positive person by embodying these qualities each day.
3.
Stick with Positive People.
It is important that you surround yourself with positive people. Positive people will help you especially if they align with your values. Furthermore, being around positive people will help you at times when you are down, with their optimism, kindness, and other great qualities. Negative people will naturally bring you down with them. Their negativity will inevitably rub on you.
You may be a person that is negative or thinks negatively about themselves. You may be that person who others see has negative. This post is especially for you, because it isn’t about who you are, to put it. It is about the person you can become. If you see that you had become negative person, it is not too late to change.
