Change can be a very scary thing. However, change is one of the surest things in life. With or without you change is going to happen. This means that we may choose to remain stagnant, but life will continue to move around us. For many, the reluctance for change is a result of the comfortable life that they create for themselves. For some, fear can be the root cause.
What is Determinism?
Many people who despise change often lack the courage for it. This is where determinism comes in. The theory of determinism proposes that we should focus only on past causes and try to explain things through cause and effect. This means that our present and future have already been decided by our past occurrences and are unalterable.
For instance, take a person who applies for a new job post, prepares for the interview and is confident that they will get this job. However, things do not go as planned and they do not get the job. Due to this outcome, this individual loses confidence and decides that they are not going for anymore job interviews as their past experiences dictates, they will fail.
Determinism gives you a reason not to start new things based on the presumption that the ending is already set. Think about the reasons you have conjured up based on your past experiences and background. We spend years perfecting our excuses for not moving forward and progressing to the next level. All this comes back to the courage to change. It is easy to blame our past experiences or fears because that is our best reason for lack of change.
We are not determined by our experiences, but the meaning we give to them is self-determining.
Th past often plays a role formation of personalities. The influence of past experiences such as heartbreak, to other forms of rejection, and calamities has a strong impact on who we may become. The truth is that nothing is actually determined by those experiences, we determine our own lives according to the meaning we give to those past experiences.

- You can decide to go back to school. A lot of people want to pursue education. In fact it has always been their dream. But fear holds them back. Fear that you are too old. Fear that you are not good enough. But the truth is that you are good enough. it is not to late.
- You can make the decision to take your physical health seriously. For you physical health this can mean eating healthier, quitting smoking and becoming more physically active.
- You can also take care of your mental health. This can mean removing things from your life that compromise your mental health. A big part of mental health is experiencing joy and being happy.
The courage to change is knowing that the past is not a determinant of your future. The courage to change means moving away from the familiar. You can choose at any given time to change your life completely. You have every right to want more for your life.
