I travelled from Salzburg to Königssee in Bavaria by bus to see what some people claim to be Germany’s most beautiful Alpine Lake. Königssee belongs to the Berchtesgaden National Park and it is Germany’s deepest lake.
I had no prior knowledge of Konigssee before I travelled there. I was researching things to do in Salzburg, when I came across a suggestion to visit Königssee. My journey to Königssee which belongs to the Berchtesgaden National Park was completely unexpected but turned out to be one of my favourite travelling experiences to date.
I travelled to this beautiful place in November. I was expecting it to be very cold, possibly snowing, and maybe a bit of rain. But instead, I was met with beautiful sunny weather, which made my experience amazing.
So, let’s answer the question on everyone’s mind… Is Königssee worth visiting, well, the simple answer is, YES.
How to get to Königssee- by boat.
When I arrived at Berchtesgaden National Park, I made my way to the boat terminal (completely accidental) and found a place to purchase a return ticket to Königssee for €22.50.
The boat ride was incredibly scenic from views of the beautiful lake to the still magnificent mountains. The highlight of my trip was the performance given by the guide who plays the trumpet and you can hear the incredible echo bouncing back from the mountain walls. Such a wonderful moment!
What to do in Königssee
1. Visit St Bartholomew Church
From the moment you approach Königssee, the first thing you will see is St Bartholomew Church. Let me attest to this, this beautiful church stands striking at the background of the stunning lake and sublime mountains.
2. Take gorgeous photos by the lake
Just behind St Bartholomew church, there is place where you can capture beautiful pictures of yourself with the lake at the backdrop. The pictures will look amazing, so make sure to capture some.
3. Enjoy Nature
If you are a genuine nature lover, Königssee, will capture your heart completely. I can only describe the experience as immersive in a surreal way. There were so many moments where I just felt crying, simply, because I was in nature.
Whether you want to explore or simply be in the moment. There is just so much natural beauty around you, that you will feel fulfilled by the whole experience.
4. Pick a hiking trail.
There are different hiking trails to choose from. Once again, when I travelled to Königssee, I had no expectations or prior knowledge of anything including the best hiking trails. So, when I got there, I looked at all the different signs for trails, and just picked one.
It turns out, that I chose the right path, by choosing to hike to Watzmann mit Eiskapelle. My adventure to Eiskapelle was nothing short of spectacular and thrilling. I was so happy that I got to see the ice chapel in real life. It was amazing to experience this place.
However, I have to say, this trail is not for everyone, it can be incredibly dangerous at times. I did slip a few times, so make sure that you capable enough to do it 🙂
WHAT I LOVED THE MOST
I can honestly say that my hike to Eiskapelle was my highlight of the trip. Being in the stillness of the mountains, away from everything, was so peaceful for me. As a person who loves nature, I was grateful to be able to see the wonder of this place.
How to get to Königssee?
The best and most favourable way to get to Königssee is by car. There is massive car park, so you are guaranteed to get a car space. When I visit Königssee again in the near future, my hope to is drive there so I can visit other places on the way!
If you are travelling by BUS, you can take the 840 to Berchtesgaden. It was a straight journey which took 1.5 hours. The bus stop I got the bus from is opposite Panorama terminal kiosk. You can also get the train, but, for me the bus was better because you will get the opportunity to see beautiful views of Austria/ Bavaria.
What if I get hungry?
There is a restaurant by St. Bartholomä, at the beginning of the Salet station. There are cute cottages-restaurants where you can have lunch. The local specialty is the trout from the lake.
Are there toilets?
Yes, there are clean and free to use toilet at the beginning of the salet station 🙂
