Show To Watch This Fall
Gilmore Girls, 2000.
If you have not watched Gilmore Girls, I would like to say that I envy you because it was one of the best cosy and nostalgic shows to watch. Gilmore Girls is the epitome of fall vibes and aesthetics.
This drama is centred around the relationship between a thirty-something Mother Lorelai and her sixteen-year-old daughter Rory living in Stars Hallows. There are many interesting storylines in this show from mother-daughter dynamics to family drama, relationships, and so more. You will certainly fall in love with Stars Hollow and its residents. I cannot recommend this show enough. For the rest of us GG girls, it’s time for another Fall re-watch.
Movies to Watch this Fall
Little Women, 2019.
Little Women is centred around four sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, growing up in Massachusetts during the Civil War and the years following it. Meg wants a family and a fine house of her own, Jo wants to be a writer, Beth merely wants everyone to be happy, and Amy wants to be a painter. They are close to their mother, Marmee, and their father who is away serving in the war and eagerly befriend the boy next door, Laurie.
The 2019 movie is adapted by Greta Gerwig, and starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen and Timothy Chalamet. Gerwig focuses on all four sisters in the adaptation which captures the heart of the story. This is the perfect fall movie with its autumnal landscapes.
Coraline 2009.
Coraline Jones has always dreamed of living in a better world. While exploring her new home, she finds a secret door that leads to an alternate world that closely mirrors her own, but, in many ways, seems better until she realizes everything is not what it seems. (PG)
I recently re-watched this movie in the cinema as it was released to celebrate its 15th anniversary. After all these years, I still found this movie scary but brilliant. I loved watching again with my adult brain and understanding the themes a bit more. If you are looking for a spooky, but fun fall movie, this is the one for you.
Good Will Hunting, 1997.
Good Will Hunting story follows Will Hunting (played by Matt Damon), a young genius mathematician who had been dealt tough cards in life. This puts him in a position to meet with therapist Sean Maguire (played by Robin Williams), who would guide him through his deep-rooted trauma.
Books to Read This Fall
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wild, 1890.
When having his portrait painted, Dorian Gray declares he would give anything to stay youthful – even his soul. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life, indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence.
This is the perfect fall book to read with themes of duplicity, beauty and vanity, influence and corruption. This is one of my favourite classics to read and is easy to read.
Babel by R.F. Kuang, 2022.
Babel is a historical fantasy novel that follows a Chinese boy, Robin Swift, who’s taken from the slums of Canton in 1828 by Oxford professor Richard Lovell to prepare for eventual study at the fictional Royal Institute of Translation at Oxford University, otherwise known as Babel.
If you love dark academia this is a great book for you to read this fall. My favourite aspect of this book was the in-depth knowledge of different languages. Kuang clearly did her research, as seen through the historical details littered in the story.
Wuthering Heights 1847, by Emily Brontë.
Wuthering Heights was written by Emily Brontë in 1847. The story follows the life of Heathcliff, a mysterious person, from childhood to his late thirties. Heathcliff is raised in an adopted family and then is reduced to the status of a servant, running away when the young woman he loves decides to marry another.
This story is often misleadingly categorised as a romance story. However, upon reading it, most people will tell you otherwise. It’s dark, and twisted story that conveys the deep themes about life.
Macbeth by Shakespeare 1623.
Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, is a brave Scottish general in King Duncan’s army. However, upon hearing the three witches’ prophecy that he would become King of Scotland, he becomes tyrannical. With his wife’s help and encouragement he kills King Duncan, but this fills him with deep regret and guilt.
