The Charm of Lisbon: What is Lisbon Best Known For?

I visited Lisbon for the first time, and it was love at first sight. I was completely enraptured by this picturesque city, and I know that I will visit it again very soon. So, what is Lisbon best known for and why should you visit this beautiful city?

Lisbon the vibrant capital city of Portugal is located on the western coast of Europe.  It is known for its colourful architecture, old-fashioned trams, charming old neighbourhoods, rich history and delicious food. Topping it all, are the kind and welcoming locals who make this city so easy to love.

Let’s get into the things that Lisbon is Best Known For:

1. Old-Fashioned Trams

The Charm of Lisbon: What is Lisbon Best Known For?

I know that a lot of things may seem more charming than they are when abroad. But no one can dispute the allure that comes from seeing the old-fashioned trams.

The most famous is Tram 28 which takes riders on a 40-minute trip up or down. The tram goes through famous neighbourhoods such as Alfama, Baixa, and Graca along with many historical sights. It is important to remember that locals use this Tram to get to work, so please be mindful and respectful.

2. Elevadar Da Bica Funicular

The Elevator da Bica is one of the most photographed funiculars in Lisbon due steep route and river in the background. It is stunning and picturesque in real life. Highly recommend going to visit and taking gorgeous pictures.

3. Alfama District

Alfama is one of Europe’s oldest neighbourhoods. It was occupied by the Romans, Visigoths and other Germanic tribes. You cannot travel to Lisbon without visiting Alfama, it is the most important part of the trip I would argue.

There are many scenic and quaint corners of Alfama that you can see. You don’t need a map to see it, you just need your camera and be ready to walk… a lot. But it will absolutely be worth it.

4. Lisbon Cathedral

The Lisbon Cathedral is almost nine centuries old and one of the city’s oldest monuments. The cathedral has a mixture of different architectural styles.

5. Santa Luzia Viewpoint

The Santa Luzia is found by many as Lisbon’s most beautiful and scenic viewpoint. The view is framed by a vine-covered pergola which adds to the place.

6. Festas de Lisboa

If you are visiting Lisbon between late May and July, you will see the city at its most festive in Alfama especially. The feast of St Anthony is a major festival lasting over a month. I enjoyed my time at the festival indulging in a lot of delicious food (fish!) and desserts.

7. Azulejo

The Azulejo is a form of Portuguese and Spanish-painted ceramic tilework. The first art compromising ceramic tiles appeared shortly after the Moors invaded Portugal and brought their art with them.

You will find azulejos in the interior and exterior of churches, ordinary houses, schools, palaces, restaurants, train stations and more.

8. Pink Street

The Vibrant Pink Street

You have probably seen many pictures of Pink Street in Cais do Sodre. I visited the street during the day, and it was surprisingly amazing. It is worth seeing especially if you want to take cool pictures.

9. Pastel de Nata

You cannot travel to Lisbon without trying the pastel de nata. This famous Portuguese pastry is a crunchy tart filled with luscious egg and cream. The dessert has captured the hearts of visitors from all over the world with its unique flavour and texture.

O’L Final Thoughts

I hope this post has convinced you that Lisboa is your next big destination. This city will leave you wanting more of it.

It is worth visiting;

Happy Travels
