When it comes to New York City, you either love it or hate it. As for me, I absolutely love this city in all its glory, and that love started from childhood. I grew up watching a lot of American movies and television shows, most of which were set in New York City.
So, when I visited NYC in 2023, it felt very nostalgic for me. It felt surreal to finally see all the famous buildings, monuments, and much more.
This begs the question, why do people love NYC?
Time Square
Your first encounter with Times Square was probably in a movie or TV show. So naturally, as a first-timer, I was intrigued to see this famous landmark. I can attest to this, Time Square, is captivating, energetic, and very colourful. The bright billboards and buzzing atmosphere add to the experience, making it truly unique.
You’ll find yourself saying ‘New York isn’t a real place’ with all the fascinating people that you’ll encounter and extortionate prices for food, but its still a must visit. Just because it’s a tourist trap, doesn’t meant it’s any less exciting.
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
You simply cannot visit NYC and not see the famous Statue of Liberty 🗽. The Statue is located on Liberty Island, a short ferry ride from America’s most famous immigration center, Ellis Island.
We didn’t see the statue up close, but, got an amazing view of it while on the ferry to Staten Island. It was a satisfying view which made me truly appreciate Ms Liberty 🗽.
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is a 102- story Art decor scrapper in the Midtown South neighbourhood of Manhattan in NYC. It’s another landmark that has been well portrayed in movies and tv shows, you must see it.
Explore the Diverse Neighborhoods
NYC’ has many unique neighborhood’s, each with its own charm.
Greenwich Village is known for its bohemian vibe, and cozy cafes. It was once known for protests and underground movements, The Village is now most associated with A-list residents and shockingly expensive rent. It was pleasant to walk around the village and take in its wonderful surroundings.
West Village is known for its colourful, artistic residents. I absolutely loved seeing the brownstones townhouses, which are architecturally reminiscent of Victorian houses.
Chinatown and Little Italy are fascinating neighbourhoods that are a must-see. Little Italy and Chinatown attracted Italian and Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s, with densely packed ethnic communities having grown around them, as they brought their customs, food and language.
There are many, noodle shops and other specialty restaurants, each one with a devoted following that you must check out.
Explore Central Park
Central Park offers a serene escape from the hustle of the city. Rent a bike, take a stroll, or enjoy a boat ride on the lake. Don’t miss Belvedere Castle, the Central Park Zoo, and the stunning Bow Bridge.
Indulge in NYC’s Culinary Scene
Possibly, one of the most important reasons why people love New York City has to do with the Food.
• Bagels and Lox: Visit Russ & Daughters or Ess-a-Bagel for the ultimate New York bagel experience.
• Pizza: Grab a slice at Joe’s Pizza or enjoy a sit-down meal at Lombardi’s, the first pizzeria in the U.S.
Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge is another famous New York sight that felt familiar to me. Strolling down the Brooklyn Bridge made me feel like I was in one of the Spider-Man movie scenes. In particular Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies.
For stunning views of Manhattan and Brooklyn, you have to go on the bridge. Once you’re on the other side, explore the charming streets of DUMBO and enjoy a slice of Grimaldi’s famous pizza.
Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central Terminal is one of the most-visited destinations in NYC for a reason: history, architecture, dining, and shopping, all under one magnificent roof.
If I make another pop culture reference, no one will take me seriously. So, two words Gossip Girl.
You have to see the station without a shadow of doubt!
The Morgan Library & Museum
The Morgan library is a short walk from Grand Central and Penn Station, the Morgan is a major exhibition venue for fine art, literature, and music, one of New York’s great historic sites, and a wonderful place to dine, shop, and attend a concert or film.
The library is nothing short of architectural brilliance, that makes you feel like you are in another time. There’s so much history in just one place, that you can’t miss a trip to see it all.
Yankee Stadium
Yankee Stadium is a baseball stadium located in the Bronx in New York City. It is the home field of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees and New York City FC of Major League Soccer.
There’s something that captivating about the atmosphere in a sports stadium. You may not be familiar with baseball and that’s okay. I’m sure you will still love the experience.
Basketball Game
The Madison Square Garden is famous As the home of the New York Knicks, Rangers, professional boxing, college basketball and so much more, the Garden’s most memorable sports events include the 1970 Knicks NBA Championship.
Barclays Centre
Barclays Center, a 18,000-seat arena in Brooklyn, New York, is the home of several professional sports franchises. If you get the opportunity to watch a game, make sure to do so. If you get your tickets in time you may find affordable seats.
O’L final thoughts
There are so many reasons why people love New York City. This is in no way an exhaustive list of the things that make people love the city. Bear in mind, however, that there’s a difference between visiting and living in a major city. So my love comes mainly from my limited travel experience, which I will forever cherish. If you are going to New York City soon, I wish you a safe and good trip.
Happy and Safe Travels
